Exploring the new fuel landscape
By 2050, the world’s energy demand is expected to grow by 50 percent. Meeting that demand while cutting carbon emissions and ensuring energy security is one of the greatest challenges of our time.
There’s no single answer to the energy challenges we face. The future isn’t one fuel –it’s many. Advanced electrification, hydrogen, biofuels and low-carbon solutions must work alongside renewables to create a resilient, interconnected energy system.
"What gives me hope is the level of collaboration – across industries, borders, and disciplines. We’re seeing a shift from competition to co-creation," says Tue Johannessen, Vice President, Head of Strategy & Partnerships, BU EFT. "If we stay focused, align incentives, and scale wisely, together we can bring the cost of sustainable solutions down and create a path for a fair and just energy transition."
In the marine industry, the emergence of new fuels like renewable methanol and ammonia, digital solutions, complex geopolitics, evolving regulations, and growing societal expectations are reshaping the maritime landscape.
"Today's marine fuel landscape is already diverse, says Elena Timossi, Global Sales, Fuel Supply Systems. We expect the picture will progressively clarify as soon as the rules will be set and the value chain will reach an higher level of maturity. But choices should be done now."
By developing and implementing advanced technologies, Alfa Laval contributes to the adoption of alternative fuels and the reduction of energy consumption.
"The energy transition is no longer a future ambition—it’s a present necessity," says Tue. "We must act now to build resilient, low-carbon systems that can scale."
We believe the path forward lies in a multi-fuel landscape. Future-proofing to us means having the capability to switch and adapt as fuel technologies evolve... The journey to net zero is not simple, and significant innovation is needed – Elena Timossi, Global Sales, Fuel Supply Systems
We are moving away from a fossil-based, 'monolithic' system toward a mosaic of renewable and low-carbon solutions. It's not about finding a silver bullet, but about enabling a portfolio of solutions – Tue Johannessen, Vice President, Head of Strategy & Partnerships, PU EFT
